Meet Sovansa! A trainee counsellor and mental health lead at Inclusive Cambodia

Meet Sovansa, a trainee counsellor at Inclusive Cambodia, whose journey embodies resilience, compassion, and a deep commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of Cambodians. In this article, we delve into her background, aspirations, and the support Inclusive Cambodia provided her in her professional development in the field of mental health.

Background and Inspiration

At 32 years old, Sovansa hails from Phnom Penh, where she grew up surrounded by five sisters. Despite graduating with a bachelor's degree in accounting studies in 2013, Sovansa's career path took various turns, from roles as a cashier, stock controller, to volunteering and part-time jobs in microfinance. However, it was her experience working with a Japanese NGO in hospital equipment that became a turning point in her journey.

Like many others, Sovansa faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, losing her job and subsequently relocating to support her husband's work. Despite setbacks, she remained resilient, taking up work in a factory until its closure during her pregnancy. It was during this period that Amara, Executive Director of Inclusive Cambodia, offered her the opportunity to undergo counselling and mental health training - a decision that would shape her career trajectory.

Sovansa’s journey with Inclusive Cambodia

Savansa's journey with Inclusive Cambodia began as a part-time opportunity, where she immersed herself in extensive mentorship and training from Gemma, an experienced mental health professional and counsellor from the UK.

“Before connecting with Gemma, I had never heard of terms like “mental health” and “social work”.

Sovansa quickly discovered a passion for empathetic listening and supporting others, qualities she had unknowingly exhibited throughout her life.

Today, Sovansa practices counselling with a group of beneficiaries in Inclusive Cambodia’s new clinic located on Koh Dach Island, a sanctuary specially designed to foster comfort and trust. Furnishing her counselling room was not only about aesthetics but creating a safe space where children feel valued and understood. Sovansa emphasizes the importance of building relationships and trust, recognizing the crucial role the environment plays in therapeutic interventions.

Professional Development and Aspirations

Through an ongoing training program run by Inclusive Cambodia, Sovansa delved into counselling methodologies, realizing the alignment between her innate qualities and the counselling profession. Her journey underscores the transformative power of education and mentorship in empowering individuals to realize their full potential.

Looking ahead, Sovansa's aspirations are fueled by a desire to create lasting change within the Cambodian community. Leveraging tools like the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), she tracks the progress of her beneficiaries, ensuring tailored interventions that address unique needs of the people she works with. Her ultimate goal is to continue expanding her counselling skills until being able to open her own dedicated mental health space.

In conclusion, Sovansa's story shows the spirit of resilience, adaptability, and compassion that defines Inclusive Cambodia's mission. Through her dedication and determination, she embodies the transformative impact of empowering individuals to overcome adversity and thrive.
